Switching from Wati

Moving from Wati to ClerkChat

The hard part of this move is not the software, it is the phone number. Wati is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, so your number is registered to them with Meta. Moving it is a real process with real downtime, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not done it.

What you lose

The question everyone actually has, answered first.

  • Message templates, without re-approvalTemplates are approved against a specific WhatsApp Business Account setup. Expect to resubmit them and allow time for review. Start this before you cut over, not after.
  • Broadcast lists and contact attributesWati's contact database, tags and custom fields are theirs. Export the contact list while you still have access.
  • Team inbox assignment and agent workflowsWati is built around a shared inbox that agents work. ClerkChat answers rather than routes, so assignment rules and agent performance reporting have no equivalent here.
  • Chat historyPast conversations stay with Wati. Export anything you need for records first.

What carries across

  • Your WhatsApp number itselfThe number is yours and it can move between providers. Meta supports migrating a registered number from one solution provider to another, and your customers keep messaging the same number they always have.
  • Your help content, as training materialAnything you wrote for agents to copy and paste becomes a training source. Canned replies are particularly good input because they are answers you already approved.
  • Your display name and business profileThe verified business name and profile attach to the WhatsApp Business Account rather than to Wati, so they survive the move.

How to do it

  1. 1
Export everything while you still have accessContacts, canned replies, template text and any chat history you need. Do this first, because access ends when the subscription does.
  2. 2
Set up the ClerkChat agent before touching the numberTrain it on your help content and test it on the hosted page. You want the agent answering well before the number moves, not after.
  3. 3
Start template re-approval earlyResubmit the templates you actually use. Review takes time and it is the step most likely to delay a cutover.
  4. 4
Plan the number migration windowPick a genuinely quiet period. There is an interruption while the number is released by one provider and registered with the next, and you cannot receive messages during it.
  5. 5
Migrate, verify, then close WatiOnce messages are arriving and the agent is answering, keep Wati open for a short overlap for reference, then close it at the end of the billing period.

What catches people out

  • Two-factor PIN blocks more migrations than anything elseNumbers registered with a WhatsApp two-step verification PIN cannot be moved without it. Find that PIN before you start. Not having it is the single most common reason a migration stalls.
  • The interruption is real, so choose the window deliberatelyBetween release and re-registration the number cannot receive messages. For most small businesses a weekend or an overnight window is enough, but do not attempt it during a sale or a campaign.
  • Wati's per-conversation charges and ours are different shapesMeta's own conversation charges apply whoever your provider is. What changes is the platform fee on top. Compare those two lines separately or you will compare the wrong numbers.

When not to move

If any of these describe you, staying with Wati is the right call and we would rather say so than sell you a migration you regret.

  • You run a staffed WhatsApp team that needs assignment, routing and agent reporting
  • Broadcast campaigns to segmented lists are your main use, rather than answering questions
  • You cannot tolerate any interruption on the number and have no quiet window to use

Questions

Do I lose my WhatsApp number if I leave Wati?
No. The number is yours, and Meta supports migrating a registered number between business solution providers. What you need is access to the WhatsApp Business Account and the two-step verification PIN if one is set.
How much downtime should I expect?
A short window while the number is released by one provider and registered with the next, during which messages cannot be received. Plan it for a quiet period rather than a campaign week.
Do my message templates carry across?
Expect to resubmit them for approval. Start that before the cutover, since review time is the most common cause of delay.
What happens to my contact list?
Export it before you cancel. Tags and custom fields live in Wati's contact database and do not transfer automatically.
