An Intercom alternative for teams who do not need the platform
Intercom is a complete customer communication platform, and priced like one. Its Fin AI charges per resolution. ClerkChat does one job — answering questions from your own documents, on your site and in messaging apps — on flat pricing.
You are probably comparing these because
- You use a fraction of what you pay for
- Per-resolution AI pricing means success costs more
- Seat pricing is uncomfortable for a team of two or three
- Your customers message on WhatsApp and Instagram, not only in the web messenger

| Best fit | Small teams deflecting repeat questions | Growing support organisations who need the whole platform |
A closer look at Intercom
Per-resolution pricing and what it does to behaviour
Fin charges for each conversation it resolves. It is a defensible model: a resolution is a unit of value, and paying for outcomes rather than seats sounds fair. The difficulty is that it prices the thing you are trying to maximise.
Teams on per-resolution pricing start making odd decisions. They narrow where the AI is offered, or exclude topics from it, because each success carries a cost. Deflection is one of the few areas where doing more is unambiguously better, and a usage meter argues against that.
Flat pricing is not automatically cheaper. At modest volume, paying per resolution may well cost less than a flat plan, and if your conversation count is small you should do that arithmetic honestly. What flat pricing removes is the incentive to deflect less.
You are probably buying more than you use
Intercom is a platform: shared inbox, help centre, product tours, outbound messaging, reporting, workflow automation. For a support organisation of fifteen people those pieces fit together and the price reflects genuine capability.
For a team of three, most of it goes unused while all of it is paid for. That is not a criticism of Intercom, which is priced for the customer it is built for. It is a mismatch, and mismatches are what alternatives pages exist to surface.
The test is uncomfortable but simple: list the Intercom features you used this month. If it is the inbox and little else, you are buying a platform to get an inbox.
Where the conversations start
Intercom centres on its own messenger, embedded in your product or site, with email and connected channels alongside. For a SaaS product where users are signed in, that is exactly right, and the context Intercom carries about the logged-in user is genuinely useful.
For a business whose customers arrive through Instagram or WhatsApp, the messenger is the wrong front door. ClerkChat answers in those threads directly. This is less about which product is better and more about where your customers actually are, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
When Intercom is the better choice
Intercom is a serious product and for many companies the right one. These are the cases where we would not argue.
- You have a staffed support team that needs assignment, SLAs, workload management and reporting
- You want a help centre, product tours and outbound messaging from one vendor
- Your users are signed in and the customer context Intercom carries is central to how you support them
- You are large enough that platform consolidation saves more than point solutions would
ClerkChat and Intercom questions
- How does ClerkChat compare to Fin?
- Fin answers inside Intercom and is charged per resolution. ClerkChat answers across your website, a hosted page and messaging apps, on flat pricing, so deflecting more does not cost more. If everything you do already lives in Intercom, Fin is the simpler choice.
- Can ClerkChat replace Intercom entirely?
- For a small team whose Intercom use is mostly the inbox, often yes. For a support organisation relying on assignment, SLAs, help centre and reporting, no. ClerkChat deliberately does one job rather than being a platform.
- Will it definitely be cheaper?
- Not necessarily. At low conversation volume, per-resolution pricing can cost less than a flat plan. The saving appears as volume grows, and as the platform features you are not using become a larger share of the bill.
- Can I run both?
- Yes. Some teams put ClerkChat in front on their website and messaging channels, and keep Intercom for conversations that reach a person. An Intercom handoff integration is on our roadmap.
