# Create and publish your first agent

> Build a support agent, test a reply, and make it available to customers.

This tutorial takes you from an empty workspace to a published support agent. You'll add a knowledge source, test an answer, and choose a customer-facing channel.

## Before you begin

You need a Clerk Chat account and content that answers at least one customer question. A public product page or a short block of support text works.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create an agent">
    Open the [Clerk Chat dashboard](https://clerkchat.co/~), then click **Create Agent**. Enter a customer-facing name and create the agent.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add product knowledge">
    Select **Sources** in the agent sidebar. Choose **Website**, enter a page URL, and start processing it.

    Wait until the source is ready before testing questions about its content. You can continue with other ready sources while a website is indexing.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the agent's behavior">
    Select **Settings**. Add instructions that define the agent's role, tone, and escalation policy, then save your changes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Test a customer question">
    Select **Playground** and ask a question covered by your source. Start a new test chat after changing instructions or knowledge so you can verify the updated behavior.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish the agent">
    Select **Deploy**, then choose **Chat Widget** or **Help Page**. Configure the channel, save it, and switch it to **Enabled**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Test questions the agent should answer and questions it should decline. This checks both knowledge
  coverage and support boundaries.
</Tip>

## Continue configuring your agent

Your agent is now available through one customer channel. Add more [knowledge sources](/docs/guides/add-knowledge), [configure its identity](/docs/guides/configure-agent), or [review incoming conversations](/docs/guides/manage-conversations).
